The adults accepted into the nine month program will participate in a balanced combination of retreats, full-day class sessions and community projects. The program begins in September with a retreat focusing on development of personal and public leadership and team building. Once a month, participants attend a daylong session, which culminates with a team project and class graduation.
Projects completed by AL classes include:
* Tutoring Program at Mirror Lake Elementary School
* “Welcome to Federal Way” signs for the city
* Born to Read early learning program
* Birth to Three Center’s special needs-accessible play structure
* “Shelter in the Storm”, a covered structure for the Multi-Service Center food bank
* AL Youth, a version of the adult program for high school students
* Celebration Park improvements, including picnic tables and trail signs
* Installation of a large public mural depicting the Federal Way community
* Sweets for Success, a partnership with Americorps to raise money to cover student fees for after school sports and arts programs
* Roots to Wings, a mentoring program between senior citizens and elementary school students
*Adelaide Elementary afterschool program support, including Kids at Hope training for 80 staff, volunteers and community leaders, volunteer recruitment, and establishing a guest speaker program for the students
