ADVANCING LEADERSHIP ALUMNI

Who are Advancing Leadership Alumni?

WHO WE ARE: Since 1998, the Advancing Leadership adult program has produced eleven graduating classes consisting of 350 alumni; Advancing Leadership youth, which began in 2004, has over 150 grads. Graduates are encouraged to hold active roles in their communities, at work, at school and as volunteers.

The alumni embody a diverse group of individuals with a wide-range of skills and talents. Their common vision supports our community and the development of its future leaders. Many alumni play vital roles right here in Federal Way and in surrounding areas.  If you search the web for Advancing Leadership links, you’ll discover AL on resumes, biographies, voters’ pamphlets and many different news articles.  We’re proud of our alums – and they are proud to be a part of the AL and ALY networks!

WHAT WE’VE DONE: Our class projects have continued to benefit our city over the years.  Here’s a list of work we’ve done:

* AL 1999: K.I.T.E.S. tutoring program at Mirror Lake Elementary School

* AL 2000:  “Welcome to Federal Way” signs for the city

* AL 2001: Born to Read early learning program

* AL 2002:  Federal Way Birth to Three Center’s special needs-accessible play structure

* AL 2003:  “Shelter in the Storm”, a covered structure for the Multi-Service Center food bank

* AL 2004: AL Youth, a version of the adult program for high school students

* AL 2005: Celebration Park improvements, including picnic tables and trail signs

* AL 2006: Installation of a large public mural depicting the Federal Way community, in partnership with Americorps, on the back of the Poverty Bay Coffee Cafe.

* AL 2007: Sweets for Success 2007, a partnership with Americorps to raise money to cover student fees for after school sports and arts programs

* AL 2008: Roots to Wings, a mentoring program matching senior citizens and elementary school students, founded in partnership with the Federal Way Senior Center and Federal Way Communities in Schools (CIS).

* AL 2009: Adelaide Elementary afterschool program support, including Kids at Hope training for 80 staff, volunteers and community leaders, volunteer recruitment, and establishing a guest speaker program for the students
